THE PRINT

The Diver was created by David Hockney for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. A striking composition which artfully combines his iconic Californian 'pool' paintings of the late 1960s with the vibrant energy of a swimmer diving into rippling waters, the artwork embodies the stylised technique and compositional dynamism which characterise Hockney's very best works. Drawing for Hockney has always featured prominently in his artistic output. The Diver demonstrates Hockney's exceptional draftsmanship ability through the creation of a work of delicate beauty and deceptive simplicity. Through his innate spatial ability the artist transforms the traditional figure and ground composition into a complex network of sparkling fragmented shapes, executed in fluid strokes of his pencil. Hockney's unique use of flattened perspective highlights the viewer's alignment with the diver, bringing to the fore the dynamic action that is so lyrically conveyed in this masterful composition. This premium quality giclee art print reproduction has been produced on luxurious 100% cotton rag textured art paper using archival quality inks resulting in a superior print suitable for museum or gallery display.

THE ARTIST

David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. He is perhaps best known for his serial paintings of swimming pools, portraits of friends, and verdant landscapes. The artist’s oeuvre ranges from collaged photography and opera posters, to Cubist-inspired abstractions and plein-air paintings of the English countryside. Often returning to a certain motif again and again, he probes the manifold ways one can see an image or a space. Hockney’s exploration of photography’s effect on painting and everyday life is evinced in his hallmark work A Bigger Splash (1967). “In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you can't divorce the two, as, we are now aware, you cannot have time without space and space without time,” he has explained.
